Sustainability: Why Wood is the Choice of the Future

Sustainability: Why Wood is the Choice of the Future

Wood. It’s a resource that’s been around for centuries. Made by nature and used by us, it’s been utilized in everything from tall ships to houses, pianos to plates. And due to its renewable properties, it’s here to stay.

Our family likes to grow our own fruits and vegetables whenever we can. We plant seeds, tend the land, and watch our harvest sprout. Each summer, we gather the ripened tomatoes from our garden. And, as long as we continue to care for these plants, the tomatoes will be back next year.

We take a similar approach to our product development. It’s why we embrace wood so heartily.

One of the best aspects about wood is that it is endlessly renewable.
A renewable resource is a natural source or supply of materials that can replenish itself within a human lifespan.

As opposed to non-renewable resources, the tools needed and the amount of time needed to harvest renewable resources are minimal, taking into consideration our current technologies and ways of doing things.

Resin is a unique material that pairs well with wood because it allows us to use the outer portions of the tree that are usually discarded and turned to chips or sawdust. Much of the character of the wood is in the outer layer just under the bark. Wood that would normally be discarded can be used with the addition of resin to enhance what would normally be a flaw, into true character.

The grain of the wood is a storybook of the life of the tree. The tree naturally ages and dies, returning to the earth. When the tree is cut down and used to make objects of beauty, it is given a second life.

Trees and grasses, i.e. bamboo, are one of the few truly renewable resources we use as humans. When grown responsibly and harvested sustainably, they bring health and beauty to the planet and our lives. We are responsible to bring them from life to life.
